"We stand on the shoulders of giants and a lot of them are in the room right now," June said. The pair said they work to make a difference in the community, but also to encourage others to participate. "I think awards help others to think about (philanthropy)," said June. Eve and Peter Willis, who have lived in Oakville 29 years, said they were nominated by the three organizations they are closest to, Appleby College, where their children attended school, the OHF and Wellspring Cancer Support Foundation. They have worked on various campaigns and helped raise millions of dollars for these organizations and the United Way of Oakville. Both are life members of the Appleby College Parents' Association and Peter is a member of the Appleby College Foundation's board of trustees, and a past chairman. He wanted to continue champion- ing the bursary and loan programs that allow children to attend the school who otherwise would not be able to. Eve volunteers at Wellspring's Halton-Peel Centre and organizes its golf tournament and Peter is campaign co-chair for Wellspring's Oakville Centre expansion. They've even hosted fundraising events in their home. Eve is also co-chair of the OHF capital campaign and a member of the foundation's board and has worked on United Way campaigns. When asked why they do all this work, Peter said it was to contribute. "I feel awkward, humble. We really feel that we're representing other people in the community that do far more than we do," said Eve.
