Back in the park as Lions Valley re-opens By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Lions Valley Park has reopened after being closed during the construction of the Halton Region's new Sixteen Mile Creek bridges on Dundas Street. Visitors to the park can now enjoy the new pedestrian bridges over Sixteen Mile Creek, a newly-constructed trail system from Fourth Line to the pedestrian bridges, enhanced landscaping and a reconstructed, asphaltpaved parking area in the valley. "Lions Valley Park is a great place for residents to enjoy the beauty of Halton Region," said Regional Chair Gary Carr. "Whether walking the trails or admiring the view from the lookouts on the new bridges on Dundas Street, Lions Valley reminds us of the quality of life we appreciate in the region." Halton Region and the Town of Oakville's Parks and Open Space Department undertook this joint restoration project. Oakville Mayor Rob Burton said the park's reopening had been much anticipated. The park has experienced partial closures since the summer of 2007 because of the construction. "People have made a point of telling me how much they are looking forward to the park reopening," he said. "With all of the enhancements, I know it will be another destination of choice for families and active residents alike." While the park is officially open for use, winter access is restricted to pedestrian use only as the access road is not maintained during the winter months and can be hazardous for vehicles in snow or ice conditions. The construction of the new Sixteen Mile Creek crossing on Dundas Street is part of `Building a Better Halton,' the Region's infrastructure construction plan for roads, water, wastewater, and waste management projects across Halton. The cost of making the improvements to the park has been listed at $450,000.
