"Where do you think they want to be during Christmas?" Ted Wieclawek, the fire marshal, asked the St. Dominic Catholic Elementary School class, pointing to the group of Oakville firefighters who were with him in the room. A student answered the firefighters would rather be at home with their families. "They will come but they don't want to have to come to your house," Wieclawek told the class. "They may like you very much, but they don't want to visit your house during Christmas because we do not want to have any fires and we want everybody to be safe." The fire marshal visited the class on Dec. 19, during his 12 Days of Holiday Fire Safety campaign. to be safe. And if everyone knows and understands these 12 important tips, then the chances are that my holiday wish, and I think every firefighter and fire chief in the province, their wish is going to come true because these are the guys that will have to come to your home if a fire occurs during Christmas," he said. Prior to the Wieclawek's visit, the students reviewed the 12 safety tips in class and discussed the importance of each one with the fire marshal. The tips are: 1) water fresh trees daily; 2) check all sets of lights before decorating; 3) make sure you have working smoke alarms; 4) make sure you have working carbon monoxide alarms; 5) make sure everyone knows how to get out safely if a fire occurs; 6) use extension cords wisely; 7) give space heaters lots of space; 8) when you go out, blow out any lit candles; 9) keep matches and lighters out of sight and reach of children; See Fire page 12 30-50 % OFF On Selected Items No price adjustments on previous purchases.
