www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, January 18, 2013 · 4 Metrolinx steers The Big Move into Oakville By Nathan Howes SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Metrolinx made The Big Move into Oakville Tuesday for a discussion with residents on how it can improve transportation in the area. The meeting at the Halton Regional Centre was to discuss Metrolinx's The Big Move initiative -- a 25-year and $50-billion plan to tackle gridlock and improve transportation access, integration and efficiency in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). It was the first of 12 roundtable discussions taking place across the region. "From my perspective, it's a very important conversation that affects us all. It's how we get to work, how we get to school and how we move around our communities," said Bruce McCuaig, Metrolinx president and CEO. "I see and feel firsthand the congestion problems we face here in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area." In the next 20 years, an additional three million people will join the ride in the area, "If we don't take action, we could end up spending an average of about 109 minutes in traffic or on transit each day across the region." "If we don't take action, we could end up spending an average of about 109 minutes in traffic or on transit each day across the region," said McCuaig. Traffic congestion not only adds to travel time, it also costs residents and businesses approximately $6 billion in travel and lost productivity every year, he noted. The first phase of The Big Move is already in progress -- more than $16 billion exists in dedicated funding for transit and transportation projects across the GTHA. There are more than 200 projects in construction or planning -- ranging from GO Transit platform extensions and station improvements to additional GO service, new light rail lines and new bus rapid transit lines. In all, The Big Move will bring 713 kilometres of rapid transit enhancements.
