www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, February 6, 2013 · 10 Trying your hardest, having fun just as important as winning Continued from page 6 Coaches need to communicate with the athletes at the beginning of the season. As a coach, I outline our team goal and explain how playing time is distributed. I also take each player aside and explain his role on the team prior to being selected to the team; often they don't like to hear this but it is in everyone's best interests if this happens. Within Oakville sports, the Oakville Soccer Club and Minor Oaks Hockey Association (MOHA) have fair play policies and this is commendable. However, there will always be individuals who circumvent the rules in the name of winning. I have seen coaches hand pick teams filled with ex-rep level players to win house league titles. Explain to me the fun in this when your team loses a game by 15-20 goals. My son plays house league hockey and there are very clear rules about ice time. This doesn't mean that the league isn't competitive -- players Man wins $100,000 in scratch game and coaches play to win but this is typically done within the rules of MOHA and all players get equal ice time during all games. That being said, some coaches tend to leave their stronger players on longer than everyone else. Some parents also take on the role of trainer, coach or sponsor to have their son chosen to a higher house league level. There always seem to be ways to usurp the rules. Winning is definitely a part of sports; losing is also a part of sports. As coaches and parents, hopefully we teach our children that winning isn't everything and that trying your hardest and having fun are just as important as winning. Often, as coaches we lose track of this and want to win titles for ourselves rather than for the athletes. Thank you for such a thought-provoking article. Brian Grandy, Oakville The Ontario Lottery and Gaming (OLG) Corporation announced last week that an Oakville man won a $100,000 lottery jackpot. Nicola Cipolla, 58, was reportedly ecstatic when he matched three symbols to win the $100,000 top prize in INSTANT scratch game `Money Multiplier'. "My wife couldn't believe it when I told her the news," said Cipolla while at the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto to claim his prize. Cipolla, a father of two, has played the lottery for 40 years and said he enjoys playing LOTTO MAX, LOTTO 6/49 and various INSTANT scratch tickets. He said he plans to use some of his new fortune toward a family vacation to Mexico and his children's tuition fees. The ticket was purchased at the ESSO station on Dundas Street in Oakville.
