Cat dies in Coho Way townhouse fire By Dominik Kurek OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF A house fire in northwest Oakville Friday morning claimed the life of a family cat. Fire crews responded to a call at 2441 Coho Way just after 10 a.m. to find heavy smoke inside the townhouse, after a fire started on the couch in the living room. "There's extensive smoke damage throughout the house. There was so much smoke, it was actually quite difficult to find the location of the fire," said Michael Harrison, fire prevention officer with the Oakville Fire Department. The lone occupant, a young person of an undisclosed age, managed to escape without injury, while the family pet died of smoke inhalation. "There's so much synthetic material in these (couches) that they smoke very quickly and people really have to get out very quickly, because you don't have much time," Harrison said. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The fire department estimates the cost of the damage to be between $30,000-$50,000. Michael Harrison, fire prevention officer, Oakville Fire Department "People should be diligent in training their children on how to call for help, call 911, how to react in a fire, getting out, having escape plans. We were seconds away from that being a crucial point in this fire," he said. Harrison said there are many resources available for parents to teach their children how to react in an emergency. The Oakville Fire Department is reminding residents to make sure the smoke detectors in their homes or apartments are functional as having that early warning could mean the difference between life and death.
