Concerns raised over density on old hospital land continued from p.1 The Brantwood site at 221 Allan St., will see seven detached homes built, the playground moved to the east side of the property and the front of the school building -- which falls within the Trafalgar Road Heritage Conservation District -- used in the construction of five to nine condominium units. Should keeping the school building become problematic, the portion of the site adjacent to Allan Street will be used for five detached homes. Town staff had recommended developing detached homes on six lots on the Linbrook property, 1079 Linbrook Rd., as well as maintaining the designated heritage schoolhouse, keeping the woodlot and creating a playground. However, action on this item was deferred due to an offer being made to purchase the site by a group interested in setting up a private boys school there. Concerns have been raised about the traffic such a school would bring to the area. Private school proponent Amber Way argued it would only serve 180 students -- far fewer than the 400 who attended Linbrook Public School. Way said she recently canvassed the area around the Linbrook site, interviewed 44 families and found 70 per of those she spoke to do not oppose her private school proposal. She said 10 per cent of those interviewed do not support the private school idea because of traffic concerns while 20 per cent wanted additional information or were indifferent. Way also brought an offer to purchase the site after being told by Oakville Mayor Rob Burton at a 5 | Thursday, April 11, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com We find it difficult to conceive that the up-to limit of 156 units being suggested, can be achieved and conform to Livable Oakville. Burton said the proposed recommendation would not cement a particular density at the site, but would send plans for the OTMH property back to Town staff for further work. In addition to the mixed residential component, existing plans for the area include a community centre equipped with a pool, a park, and an opportunity to retain the OTMH parking garage and former Oakville Trafalgar High School. The plan also examines potential for a medical facility on Reynolds Street adjacent to the community centre. Council endorsed the OTMH plan in principle, but also called on Town staff to bring the matter back to council with detailed designs and drawings and comments from further public consultation. Council directed Town staff to bring the matter back before council no later than June 2014. The Town owns all four properties -- or will as of 2016 in the case of OTMH, which the Town will purchase for $1. It bought the trio of school sites for $12.8 million in April 2012 after the Halton District School Board (HDSB) declared them surplus.
