Only together will we outrun cancer: Damoff continued from p.10 diseases... and as such it's difficult to find one cure," Bell told the crowd in the Town Hall atrium. "Current cancer therapeutics are limited because of some of the side effects of the treatment... the issue with chemotherapy is that it also attacks normal healthy tissue too." As head of the Canadian Oncolytic Virus Consortium, a Terry Fox funded group from across Canada, and director of the Biotherapeutics Program for the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research, Bell explained how he and other researchers are developing targeted therapies to destroy tumours without significant side effects. "Our focus has been on the creation of virus-based therapeutics that specifically infect and kill cancers without affecting normal tissues. In essence, we are creating miniature biological machines that seek out and destroy tumours in multiple ways." And preliminary research and testing is proving promising, Bell noted, with 100 per cent of the mice that received the treatment surviving, while data shows it also seems to be working on human patients. "Those who get the treatment often get standard cold-like symptoms at first, and then it's gone, along with cancer," he said. "What's most promising is that further research on mice has shown the virus teaches the body to reject future cancer growth." Damoff said Bell's presentation helped show firsthand the progress being made in the fight against cancer and left no doubt in people's minds of how important research dollars are. Those interested in participating in the 2013 Terry Fox Run in Oakville can sign up for the two-kilometre, 5K or 10K routes online at www.terryfox. org and click the `Teams' tab -- participants can walk, run, bike, board, blade, push a stroller or even walk the dog. "Terry said, `Even if I don't finish, we need others to continue. It's got to keep going without me,'" Damoff said. "Only together we will outrun cancer." 13 | Friday, April 19, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Pam Damoff It is time for your Spring Clean-up with SilverRiver Landscaping!
