www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, May 24, 2013 | 4 Family friend shocked by murder accusation by Dominik Kurek Oakville Beaver Staff A close family friend of Oakville's Mark Smich -- who is charged with first-degree murder in the Tim Bosma case -- told the Oakville Beaver she's shocked by the news and can't believe it could be true. "I was completely shocked when I heard his name on the radio," said the woman, who wished to remain anonymous. The friend said she has known the Smich family for years and doesn't believe the accused, aged 25, is a person who would commit such a crime. "The accusations are quite concerning. We just don't know him as a person who would do such a thing," she said. "He's very social. He has a lot of friends. He's very family oriented. He loves his sisters and mother. He really takes a part in her life. He's a positive, good person." Smich has two older sisters, the woman said. Hamilton police arrested Smich Wednesday morning in the area of Dorval Drive and Wyecroft Road. He was walking less than a kilometre from the Montrose Abbey home where he reportedly lived with his mother. Smich is the second suspect arrested and charged in the death of Bosma, of Ancaster. Following the Hamilton police announcement of Smich's arrest, a throng of media converged on the Montrose Abbey Drive house, where it's believed Smich was living. The family friend believes Smich is not a violent or aggressive person. "I've never seen him to be that way. He's not that way. He's friendly. He's happy. All of our friends who we've had have known him to be a friendly, happy, social person." Hamilton police said Smich and Dellen Millard know each other, but would not elaborate. Millard was the first person charged with first-degree murder in the death of Bosma. Police say they are still searching for a third suspect. A YouTube video, titled GHOZTED 2012 FT. MARK.SMICH (FREEUP) (OFFICIAL VIDEO), had comments referencing Bosma's murder Wednesday, using the hashtag #FREEMARKSMICH. The video -- produced by Dolo Productions and described as horror art -- shows a man appearing to butcher a bloody body in a dimly-lit room covered in plastic. A man in the video bears resemblance to the man arrested by Hamilton police. The disturbing video lists someone named Mark S. in the credits as "The killer," but that was changed within hours of the news conference. Soon after, the video was deleted. A Twitter account linked to Dolo Productions did not respond to interview requests Wednesday. The account was deleted a short time later. Hamilton police spokesperson Catherine Martin said Wednesday, police were aware of the video's existence, but could not comment. The detective in charge of the case could not be reached for comment. According to Hamilton police, Smich was previously known to police. A man of the same name and age was arrested on a graffiti charge in Oakville late last year. Smich's neighbours on Montrose Abbey Drive said the young man was often seen with his friends on the front porch of the house. Some called him friendly, while others said they stayed away from the house and the family, saying several people in the neighbourhood had trouble with them. Smich's father, Andrew Smich, who does not live with his son, told the Toronto Star he learned of the arrest through media reports. "I'm sorry I cannot say anything," he said. One of Smich's sisters was reported to have been married last Sunday. with files from the Hamilton Spectator JUNIOR PROGRAMS KaneffGolf is committed to growing the game.
