Sheridan College has been selected to host the 2014 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association men's soccer national championships, which will be held Nov. 5-8 at the recently-renovated Sheridan Stadium. "This is definitely an exciting time for our department," Sheridan athletic director Jim Flack said. "We are honoured that our colleagues at the CCAA and (Ontario Colleges Athletic Association) have supported our vision for this championship, and we look forward to putting on a great event." Sheridan's bid for hosting the championship was first approved by the membership of the OCAA last month, then ratified by the CCAA last week. The tournament will require the eventual national champion to win three games in four days. Quarter-finals will be played Nov. 5, the semifinals will be contested Nov. 6 and the title game will be played Nov. 8. The bronze-medal game will be scheduled for Nov. 7. This will be the first time Sheridan will host a national soccer championship. The school has hosted previous CCAA championships in men's basketball (1987 and 2006), men's volleyball (1992) and women's volleyball (1993). This fall's OCAA provincial women's soccer championships will also be played at Sheridan Stadium Oct. 25-26. Recent renovations to the facility included the installation of FIFA Level 1 turf, covered seating for 1,000 spectators and new change rooms. Oakville put a scare into the 14-1-1 Green Gaels Thursday in Clarington, taking a 9-8 lead midway through the third period before dropping a 10-9 decision. It marked the third time this season Oakville has lost by two goals or less against East Conference heavyweights (the Buzz lost 9-8 to the Gaels May 17 in Oakville and fell 9-7 to the 13-1-1 Halton Hills Bulldogs May 4 in Georgetown.) Eddie Renaud had a hat trick and an assist for the Buzz Thursday, and Foster Cuomo notched two goals and a helper. Troy O'Donnell, Colton Watkinson, Keyan McQueen and Sam Neeb also tallied, with O'Donnell adding three assists. Josh Falkenstern took the loss in net. The Buzz, 10-4 with six games remaining in the regular season and basically assured a fourth-place finish in the East, shook off Thursday's loss to whip the Orillia Kings 16-6 Saturday in Orillia. Oakville broke open the game by outscoring the winless Kings 8-1 in the second period. O'Donnell (four goals, two assists) and An- Lacrosse drew Kew (goal, five assists) each enjoyed six-point evenings, while Mitch Wales (goal, four assists) had five points. Nathan Maracle, Mitchell Bolduc and McQueen scored twice each, and Jimmy Shea, Nick Crepinsek, Greg Campbell and Paul Rakoczy contributed singles. Netminder D.J. Eckert collected his third win of the campaign. The Buzz will visit the Mimico Mountaineers tonight (Wednesday) before hosting the Newmarket Saints Friday at Toronto Rock Athletic Centre (8 p.m. start). Sr. B Titans fall to 2-9 It appears that a return trip to the Ontario Lacrosse Association senior B playoffs is not in store for the Oakville Titans. Oakville lost both its games last weekend and is currently mired at the bottom of the seven-team league's standings with a 2-9 record. The Titans finished tied for first a year ago, the team's first season in Oakville after relocating from Elmira, before being ousted in the first round of the playoffs. The Owen Sound North Stars handed Oakville a 13-11 defeat Friday, and the St. Catharines Saints beat the Titans 13-5 Sunday. Both games were played at Glen Abbey Recreation Centre. Brad Gillies had three goals and an assist in a losing cause for the Titans Friday. Connor Latimer scored a goal and had three helpers, Sean Gillies tallied twice and also had an assist, and Casey Abbott potted a pair of markers. Mike Gillan, Jeff Sehl and Simon Desousa also scored singles. In Saturday's contest, the Titans got goals from Matt Pelkey, Sean Gillies, Abbott, Latimer and Gillan. Latimer added two assists. Oakville sits four points behind the Owen Sound North Stars for the sixth and final playoff spot. The Titans have five games remaining on their schedule, while the North Stars have seven. Oakville will play a pair of road games this weekend, visiting the Norwood James Gang Friday and the Brooklin Merchants Sunday. The Titans won't play at home again until July 5 versus the Six Nations Rivermen.
