www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, June 28, 2013 | 10 The Regional Municipality of Halton OAKVILLE Don't dive into unsafe water If you're planning on spending the day at one of Halton's beaches during the long weekend, the Region advises you check water quality first. "Halton has more than 25 kilometres of waterfront and recreational beaches at parks throughout the region," Gary Carr, Halton Regional Chair, said in a press release. "Dial 311 or visit www.halton.ca/beaches to get your beach water quality results. This summer, stay safe and enjoy all Halton has to offer." The water at Halton's beaches is tested by Region's Health Department to determine if its quality is suitable for swimming and other recreational activities. Swimming in water with a high bacterial count can result in eye, ear, nose or throat infections, or gastrointestinal or stomach illnesses. Visitors to Halton's beaches can help keep the bacteria counts low by: · not feeding animals or birds · observing local "stoop and scoop" bylaws and always picking up their pet's waste · practising pollution-free boating by disposing of human waste properly · keeping their private sewage disposal system in good working order For more information on beach water monitoring, dial 311 or go to the Region's website.
