Wellspring Birmingham Gilgan House recently received a $250,000 boost from Longo's to help fund its newly-built teaching kitchen. The new addition to the Oakville cancer support centre at 2545 Sixth Line will provide information for those living with a range of cancerrelated nutritional issues. The kitchen will host Wellspring's Nourish Program, which offers a variety of nutritionbased sessions that teach cancer patients and their family members about healthy nutrition. Nutrition is a key concern for cancer patients and their caregivers, said Perry Brinkert. "Many of the side effects of cancer and its treatment make it difficult to maintain a healthy diet, and may include loss of appetite, sore mouth or throat, dental and gum problems, nausea, constipation, and fatigue," she said. "I have experienced terrible fatigue and nausea from cancer treatments. Everyone knows the right food makes a difference, but exactly what that should be, and how to prepare it, is another matter," she said. "Wellspring's cooking program in the Longo's Kitchen is helping me get back on my feet." As a result of Longo's donation, Wellspring was able to build the Longo's Kitchen -- Heart of the Home, a state-of-the-art facility. Longo's has also been a supporter of Wellspring since it opened its doors in 2001. "We pride ourselves on being able to provide healthy foods to people in the communities we serve, and for those with particular challenges, such as cancer, we want to go a step further and help them learn how to eat well throughout their treatment," said Rosanne Longo, chair of the Longo's Family Charitable Foundation. Wellspring Birmingham Gilgan House has been helping people in Halton and Peel cope with cancer for 13 years, providing more than 40 free programs, including support, exercise, nutrition, relaxation, coping skills, and a variety of educational presentations and workshops.
