Early bird rate for Oakville Hornets hockey Time is running out to take advantage of the early-bird registration rate for the upcoming Oakville Hornets Girls Hockey Association season. Rates for the 2013-14 season will increase by $50 on Aug. 1. According to Hornets officials, registrations are quickly filling up, with only a few spots available in most divisions. The Hornets, who will begin their 18th season in late September, have grown into one of the largest organized female hockey programs in Canada. More than 1,250 female players participated last season in divisions ranging from tyke house league to intermediate representative. The house league is a recreational level with seven age divisions (tyke, novice, atom, peewee, bantam, midget/intermediate and ladies) and 6-10 teams in each. The Hornets also have 22 rep (travel) teams registered for regional play in 2013-14. The association plans to jump-start the season with its largest-ever rep tournament in September, when 180 teams from across Ontario and the United States are scheduled to participate. In February, the house league tournament -- the largest girls' house league hockey competition in the world -- is expected to draw more than 150 squads. Sandwiched between those events are 22 weeks of games and practices during the regular season, where teams are on the ice 2-4 times a week in preparation for playoffs and championship rounds in March. The Hornets are coming off one of their most successful seasons ever, sending 13 teams to the Ontario Women's Hockey Association championships and bringing home three gold medals and two silver. In 2012, the Hornets qualified eight teams for provincials and won two gold and four silver. Volunteers (high school students and adults) are still needed to assist the Hornets with the two major tournaments. The Hornets will hold their annual golf tournament Thursday, Aug. 29 at Hamilton's Beverley Golf & Country Club. Golf and dinner can be purchased for $95, golf only will cost $60, and dinner only will cost $45. The cost for golf and dinner for a foursome is $350, and holes can be sponsored for $1,000 (including a foursome and dinner).
