Canadian Open looks green from every angle continued from p.9 we are actually doing is purchasing those types of offsets." Besides purchasing carbon offsets, the Open has also set a landfill waste diversion goal of 70 per cent. This is not the easiest objective with 100,000 people expected between July 2228, but Craig said it is achievable. Concession areas at the Open will feature separate cans for garbage, recycling and organics so that material that doesn't have to go to the landfill doesn't go there. Halton Region has also proposed setting up a kiosk in the concession areas featuring `waste ambassadors,' special volunteers who make sure recyclables and organics go to the right place. Craig said RBC is also working to make sure there are recycling options for many of the non-patron-related waste created by the Open including the many carpets from the hospitality areas. Free water stations will be set up throughout the Open in an effort to discourage the purchase of bottled water. "Last year in Hamilton, it was a hot weekend and they estimated they filled more than 50,000 bottles," said Craig. "Even if you can say that saved 25,000 water bottles from being sent to recycling or landfill -- that is a tremendous environmental impact." Spectrum, the Open's concession service provider, has worked to offer items that come in recyclable or compostable packaging. Finally, Craig said RBC has made a green choice by holding the Open at Glen Abbey Golf Club, which he noted is a certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program member. The program helps people enhance the valuable natural areas and wildlife habitats that golf courses provide, improve efficiency, and minimize potentially harmful impacts of golf course operations. Other initiatives include promoting cycling to the Open through the establishment of a bike valet service. All these green initiatives do not come cheap with Craig anticipating RBC has spent tens of thousands of dollars to make the event carbon neutral. 11 | Wednesday, July 24, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com mid-summer sale 3 DAYS ONLY!
