www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Wednesday, August 28, 2013 | 16 IT'S A GREAT TIME TO PLANT! New larger Blue Box nets bigger impact Bigger is better in the case of Halton Region's 22-gallon Blue Box. Regional officials are reporting an eight per cent increase in the amount of Blue Box and GreenCart materials being collected after distributing more than 50,000 of the new larger boxes to residents over the last couple of months. The bigger bins and the introduction of new acceptable materials in the Blue Box were part of enhancements made to the Region's waste collection program in April. Other changes included the introduction of garbage tags and a three-garbage bag limit, which has contributed to a four per cent decrease in garbage collected. "Halton residents are very committed to waste diversion," said Regional Chair Gary Carr. "As a result of these efforts, the life of Halton's landfill site will be extended by an additional four years, resulting in a long-term savings of $15 million to taxpayers." In addition, 95 per cent of Halton residents are currently placing out three bags of garbage or less every other week. The Region is reminding residents that more than three bags require a garbage tag, up to a total of six garbage bags (three untagged and three tagged). The maximum weight per bag is 23 kilograms. Complimentary tags have been given to residents since April to help them transition to the new garbage bag limit, however, these tags will expire on Sept. 7. Residents will need to purchase tags at select retail locations, municipal buildings and online at www.halton.ca/garbagetags. They cost $2 per tag and come in sheets of five tags ($10 per sheet). Residents should begin using these tags as of Sept. 9.
