The Oakville run -- and others like it across the country and around the world -- honours Fox and his Marathon of Hope. It was 34 years ago when the tousled-haired runner was forced to give up his dream to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. His bone cancer had returned. He died June 28, 1981. Last year, the Oakville event raised $102,000. This year, organizers hope to collect $125,000. People participating in the local run have the option of walking, biking, skateboarding, inline skating, running, pushing a stroller or walking a dog along a lakeside two-kilometre, 5K or 10K route. The event is non-competitive and family-friendly , with leashed dogs permitted to take part. see Residents on p.3 Andrew Berrigan, 9, (left) and Angela Berrigan, 6, had some help from their mom, Joanne Berrigan (not in photo) in building a surprise paper maché space capsule for their dad, Oakville Trafalgar High School physics teacher John Berrigan's 50th birthday. Of course, it was fashioned out of old Oakville Beaver newspapers.
