Coping with challenging youths The Halton District School Board will present Dealing with Challenging Behaviour in Children and Teens: The Collaborative Problem Solving Approach on Wednesday, Nov. 6 at the Burlington Performing Arts Centre, 440 Locust St. from 7-9 p.m. The keynote speaker is Dr. J. Stuart Ablon, director of Think:Kids in the department of psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital. Ablon will discuss a treatment model called Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS) to help parents deal with explosive/non-compliant children and adolescents. The doctor believes children and adolescents who exhibit these behaviours are lacking cognitive skills that deal with problem solving, frustration tolerance and flexibility/ adaptability. The CPS model will help adults teach these skills while reducing the frequency of explosive/non-compliant outbursts in a myriad of settings, including school, family and others. Admission to the event is free. No pre-registration is required, and parking is free after 6 p.m. For more information, contact Rebecca Newcombe at newcomber@hdsb.ca. 13 | Thursday, October 17, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com FUN it's SCARY!
