www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, November 1, 2013 | 8 Appleby unveils scholarship in founder's name by Abigail Cukier Special to the Beaver Staff at Appleby College want students from all walks of life to see the prestigious university prep school as an option for them. This is why the school is introducing what it dubs the Sir Edmund Walker Scholarship Programme. Named after the school's founding patron, the program will award up to 10 incoming students a $10,000 scholarship to be used toward their tuition for the 2014-2015 academic year. Scholarship recipients will also be priority candidates for Appleby's $2.4-million needsbased financial assistance program. "Sending your child to an independent school requires a significant financial commitment and we believe that financial need should never prevent a student from experiencing an outstanding education that will help them reach their full potential," said Innes van Nostrand, Appleby College principal. Van Nostrand says the great schools of the world are driven by a list that includes outstanding faculty, being connected to the students and having the resources to provide excellent programs. "But great kids are at the top of that list," Being strong academically is important, but so are skills in the arts or athletics or service to the community. Other important traits are empathy, giving back to the community and communication skills. And having fabulous kids makes it fabulous for everyone at the school. Principal, Appleby College Innes van Nostrand, he said. "Being strong academically is important, but so are skills in the arts or athletics or service to the community. Other important traits are empathy, giving back to the community and communication skills. And having fabulous kids makes it fabulous for everyone at the school. "One way to get outstanding kids is to have a strong scholarship program. Independent schools do not have low tuitions. If a family has a child with these characteristics, we want them to think about the opportunities that Appleby provides. No matter their financial situation." Applicants will be evaluated based on Sir Edmund Walker | photo courtesy Appleby College academic standing; school and community involvement; and leadership. Applicants will also be required to submit a minimum of one non-academic letter of reference and a reflective piece on "How they can make a difference in the lives of others." About 760 students between Grades 7 and 12 attend Appleby College, including 270 boarders. Boarding is mandatory for Grade 12 students as a way to foster independence and help them learn life skills. In addition to daily curriculum, the school provides athletics and arts programs, outdoor education and opportunities for community service. It also runs overseas service projects and exchange programs. Appleby College opened in 1911, founded by Sir Edmund Walker. One of Canada's most eminent businessmen of his time, a champion of the arts and builder of national institutions, Walker's vision for Appleby College was to produce leaders for the nation, who aspired for more than money and who understood the importance of the world beyond Canada.
