Six local students earn Duke of Edinburgh Award Six Oakville youths will be among 70 Canadians lucky enough to meet the Earl of Wessex Prince Edward when they are awarded a Duke of Edinburgh's Award of Achievement. Today's (Friday) ceremony at Toronto's Shangri-La Hotel will celebrate 50 years of challenging young Canadians in their own lives and making a mark on their communities. The Duke of Edinburgh's Award, founded by Prince Philip, is handed out to individuals aged 14-25 years, who "make a difference in their own lives and those of others by exploring their potential, taking on new challenges, and giving back to the community," stated a press release. Since being established in Canada in 1963, more than 500,000 young Canadians have received the bronze, silver and gold levels of the award. Award recipients are judged on community service, adventurous journey, skill, physical recreation and residential project. The recipients from Oakville include: · Alison Bell -- volunteered at the local hospital; went on an 85-kilometre hike and service trip to Guatemala; sings in a choir, dances and is involved in cross-country running; and took part in a one-month exchange in France · Melanie Golbeck -- assisted people with developmental challenges, volunteered at Kerr Street Ministries (KSM) as a team program leader; participated in a one-week volunteer experience in Barbados; is the head cellist in her orchestra; participates in numerous sports and physical activities; and took part in a one-week program at Ontario Educational Leadership Centre · Andrew Helsdon -- volunteered at Camp Kawartha and Kerr Street Ministries; took a six-day canoe trip in Algonquin Prosee Students on p.20 19 | Friday, November 1, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Shhhh...
