Sixty-nine new Canadians were welcomed recently at a pair of citizenship ceremonies co-hosted by the Town, Oakville Public Library (OPL), and Citizenship and Immigration Canada. "Canadian citizenship is an extraordinary privilege and we are proud these individuals from across the world have made the life-changing decision to take the Oath of Citizenship," Oakville Mayor Rob Burton said in news release. "On behalf of council, I'd like to congratulate these new Canadians. I strongly encourage them to get involved in the community." One ceremony was held Nov. 7 at Town Hall over which Donna Summerhayes, member of the Order of Canada, presided. It saw 30 candidates from 11 countries sworn in as citizens -- Joan Gibb, representing Oakville MP Terence Young, MPP Kevin Flynn, Regional Chair Gary Carr and acting-mayor Tom Adams were on hand to offer welcome. The OPL Central Branch held another citizenship ceremony Nov. 12 for 39 men and women, from 20 countries. The OPL provides weekly newcomer conversation circles and monthly Canadian citizenship preparation workshops. A settlement worker is also available at the Glen Abbey library branch, 1415 Third Line, every Monday to help newcomers settle and integrate into their new community by providing guidance and support in areas such as education, housing, employment and healthcare.
