www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, November 28, 2013 | 32 Increased interest rates will hurt Canadians with too much debt continued from p.31 decline in 2008. Within the last two weeks both the Bank of Canada and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development said we would return to full capacity by the end of 2015. After that, as the economy continues to grow, demand for goods and services will increase. Excess demand drives up prices, which is the definition of inflation. The best way to slow down the overheated economy is to take your foot off the accelerator, known as cheap money, and apply the brakes in the form of higher interest rates. Canadians who are at risk with debt, hope the government will spare them the hardship of higher rates. They may ask how the government can punish us for having too much debt when the same government entices us with low interest rates as incentive to spend more. There is zero chance the central bank will not attempt to slow down the economy. Increasing interest rates is the best tool for this. It will hurt Canadians with too much debt but the Bank of Canada has no other viable options. A historical review will add some insight into how focused governments are at controlling inflation. This is such an important goal that in the 1980s, developed countries co-operated to control a period of high inflation. There was a lot of push-back on those policies because unemployment was high. Politically, the leaders claimed their priority was to get people back to work. However, the importance of a stable economy with low inflation trumped out and interest rate increases was a central theme to slow down inflationary economies. The foundation of economic prosperity is controlling inflation. That is the ultimate goal of the Canadian government. The economy goes in cycles. There will be a full recovery and that will lead to inflation. Interest rates will rise and it is only a matter of time. Higher interest rates are a significant risk to many Canadians. -- Submitted by Peter Watson, MBA, CFP , R.F .P ., CIM, FCSI., Certified Financial Planner Factory Trained Service Tech & Electronic Fireplace Specialists GAS FIREPLACE REPAIR Experience is the Difference!
