SNBA representative Bénédicte Lecat says she received van Maurik's information and sent it to the jury. "The president of the jury said, `I choose Sunflower to enlighten the winter in Paris and the wall of the delegation,'" Lecat recalls. The SNBA exhibits at the Carrousel du Louvre Salle Le Nôtre every December with approximately 10 foreign delegations with works in oils, mixed techniques, works on paper, engraving, tapestry or sculpture. The Canadian delegation includes 20 artists from Alberta, Ontario and Québec. Van Maurik started painting when she was six years old with her father who was a billboard painter. Her first work was the green relish on a series of hamburger billboards in his home studio in Toronto. This eventually led her to a career of painting advertising murals on the sides of buildings across Canada. These included Les Misérables in Vancouver and one of the largest in Canada in Midland, Ont. This was while she was pregnant. Van Maurik lived there for four months to complete the mural working 12- to 14-hour days. "I was exhausted, but if I was having a girl, I wanted to show her girls can do anything, even when you are pregnant," said Van Maurik, whose 11-year-old daughter Riley, loves to paint. Mostly self-taught, Van Maurik studied in New York under Daniel Greene, a renowned artist regarded as one of the top portrait painters in the U.S. Since moving to Oakville three years ago, Van Maurik has concentrated on her fine art career. Working in oils and pastels, she paints portraits, landscapes, florals and still lifes. After she returns from Paris, Van Maurik intends to keep on painting. Her work has appeared in many exhibitions, including the Oakville artist Michele Van Maurik with her Sunflower painting, which was chosen to show in The Louvre Museum in Paris, France this month.
