Community Update Virtual driver training technology gives students the DriveWise advantage By Jane Muller Advertorial 5 | Wednesday, February 12, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com inside today's Editorial Sports Beaver www.insideHALTON.com Real Estate Athletic Locker Lowes Canada The Village Winemaker Rogers Staples 6 10 Artscene Classified 9 12 *All flyers not necessarily delivered to all homes For home delivery & customer service call 905-631-6095, 5300 Harvester Rd., Burlington New subscriptions call 905-631-6095 or subscribe online @ www.oakvillebeaver.com Tim Danter, who has been teaching drivers for more than 25 years, has a mixed relationship with new technology. On one hand, driver simulation technology from DriveWise Canada is an incredible teaching tool that educates his students to avoid collisions and to develop and instill responses for driving defensively. On the other hand, communication technology poses a threat to students who are tempted to text while driving. The Oakville native and featured expert on Canada's Worst Driver television series, owns All Dominion Driver Training And Traffic Education Centres Limited. Established 1979, Oakville's longest running driving school has adapted virtual reality as part of its training through the nationally branded DriveWise Canada program. The simulated driving experience puts students into the cockpit of a vehicle, surrounded by three 52-inch screens. Drivers learn to manipulate the virtual vehicle in various weather conditions, deal with brake failure and avoid rear-end and head-on collisions to name just a few. "In head-on collision avoidance, we teach students to resist the urge to follow intuition and to follow logic instead," Danter explains. The technology is also used to impress upon students the deadly dangers of distracted driving. Using a beneficial technology to combat a detrimental use of another technology, Danter says students are asked solve math problems using a calculator while driving during a simulation. The scenario ramps up the level of distraction, making more of an impact than would texting on their familiar devices. "Technology in vehicles is horrible. It's the new impaired driving," says the driver -training expert. While the majority of collisions involving young male drivers are still attributed to speed, an increasing number of their female counterparts are crashing due to distractions like texting, he adds. His concern speaks to his passion for road safety and road safety education especially for new and young drivers. DriveWise Oakville is a Ministry-approved BDE course provider that gears its programs to beginners, drivers preparing for government licensing exams and drivers seeking to improve their skills.
