7 | Wednesday, February 12, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com As Canada's athletes continue to go for the gold in Sochi, Russia, Oakville residents are getting wrapped up in the Olympic spirit and challenging others to do the same. Village Wood Road resident Laurie Kondo said her neighbourhood has covered snow banks with Canadian flags to show support for the athletes. "It's freakin' awesome when you come down our street now," said Kondo. "I think the whole Olympic message is just so awesome about coming together, doing your best and I am just really proud of what our team has been able to do." Kondo is challenging others to do the same and said Canada is proving in this Olympics that it is OK to be nice, but also competitive. So far, the reaction has been positive. "I've got friends that are almost as crazy as I am Oakvillians cheer our team Becky Wheeler, of Tweesdale Crescent, cheers as her family displays the Canadian flag in the front window of their home. Their support of Canada's Olympic athletes was inspired by that shown (above) at a Sandwell Drive house. | photos by Graham Paine Oakville Beaver (Follow on Twitter @halton_photog or facebook.com/HaltonPhotog) about the Olympics and they are coming to drive down the street," said Kondo. "It makes people smile and I think that is a great thing to do especially in February when people get a little down and tired of winter." Tweesdale Crescent resident Becky Wheeler's family was also recently inspired to show its Canadian pride for the athletes. Wheeler's 19-yearold son Ryan saw a neighbour on Sandwell Drive had displayed a large Canadian flag across the front window and decided his family needed to do the same in support of Canada's athletes. Residents can send photos of their Olympics zeal to the Oakville Beaver and we will publish them in an online gallery and in an upcoming edition. Please send your photos to nwesley@ metroland.com.
