They were given the Built Heritage Award through the Young Heritage Leaders program for their volunteer work at the interpretive site in Lakeside Park. The site is run completely by volunteers. Both Fiala and Ross contribute to the smooth operations of the house, interacting with visitors to share their interest and knowledge. Julia Mogus and her sister, Emma Mogus, are well-known in town for founding Books with No Bounds, which collects used books for aboriginal children and youths to improve their literacy. They received the Cultural Heritage Award and Natural Heritage Award respectively, through the Young Heritage Leaders program, for being advocates of local cultural heritage and showing their commitment to the environment. Julia is on the board of Volunteer Halton Youth Advisory Committee and is a member of the Steering Committee for the Community Youth in Action Network while Emma has facilitated workshops on the environment and participated in the 2012 Earth Day tree-planting event in Halton, which saw nearly 4,000 trees planted at Kelso Quarry in Milton.
