Halton Regional Chair takes home $205,514 by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff 9 | Wednesday, February 26, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Halton Region's Chair Gary Carr took home $205,514 in salary and benefits last year, while most Regional councillors earned between $52,248-$53,401. The yearly earnings of the chair and councillors were made public at a Regional Administration and Finance Committee last week, where a report outlining council's annual remuneration and expenses was received. Regional Treasurer Mark Scinocca said by David Lea Police search for man who exposed himself to teens in West Oak Trails it's typical the chair of a council or board receives the largest salary. "There was nothing special in that. That's the remuneration of salary. Increases are based on a pre-defined CPI (Consumer Price Index). There are no additional increases," said Scinocca. Milton Mayor Gord Krantz had the lowest salary and benefits on Regional council for 2013 -- $46,720. Scinocca explained Krantz's remuneration is lower because Krantz, a senior, no longer contributes to the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System (OMERS) pen- sion plan, the Canadian Pension Plan (CPP) or Canada Life pension plan. When it came to expenses, councillors had varying amounts. Halton Hills Councillor Clark Somerville had the highest conference expenses last year at $11,589. It was attributed to his duties as Halton's representative to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) where he serves as third vice-president. He is also a member of the FCM's board of directors, Rural Forum and Ontario Caucus. Burlington Mayor Rick Goldring had the lowest conference expenses at $2,019. Carr recorded the highest total of `other' expenses at $7,234. "The chair has a vehicle and he claims his mileage," said Scinocca. "That's all part of being chair, the driving that he does from community to community and stuff like that." Oakville Ward 5 Councillor Jeff Knoll had the lowest listed expenses at $104. Expenses and remuneration for Regional council totaled $1.3 million for 2013. Regional councillors, who also serve on municipal councils, collect salaries and benefits from the local council, too. Oakville Beaver Staff Halton police are investigating after a man exposed himself to two teens in the area of Canonridge Circle and Gooseberry Way Monday. At around 5 p.m., the two 14-year-olds were walking northbound along Fourteen Mile Creek Trail when they encountered a man walking in the opposite direction. Police said the man exposed his genitals to the girls as he passed them. He did not touch either teen, both of whom left the area and called police. The individual is described as white, 25 years old, 6-foot-3 with a heavy build, short, dark hair and a short, thick beard. He wore a black-hooded sweater, white running shoes and dark track pants. Police are encouraging parents to talk to their children about strangers and how to contact 911 when they need to. Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), through the web at www.haltoncrimestoppers. com or by texting `Tip201' with the message to 274637 (crimes).
