The competition gave contestants a chance to win a $500 shopping spree at the mall while the five runners-up in each age group received $25. OCO seeking submissions for concerto competition Competition juried by members of famed Gryphon Trio Young musicians are being encouraged to participate in the Oakville Chamber Orchestra's second annual Youth Concerto Competition. Applicants from the Greater Toronto Area and beyond are being asked to submit an application form and upload a video performance of themselves with piano accompaniment for a chance to win cash prizes and play as a soloist with the orchestra. Music selection requirements, rules and other details can be found by visiting the orchestra's website, www.oakvillechamber. org. The deadline for submissions is Tuesday, April 1 and an application fee of $40 will apply. A panel consisting of members of the Gryphon Trio, who provide exposure and coaching opportunities for the young musicians, will judge submitted videos. Competition finals will be held at Toronto's Remenyi House of Music on June 8. The competition is divided into two categories: junior (age 17 and under) and senior (instrumental, age 21 and under, or vocal, age 25 and under). Cash prizes include $500 for first place, $300 for second place and $200 for third place. An additional prize of $250 will be awarded to the best entrant who lives in Oakville. Harmony Zhu, Meng Jia, Wilson Wu, Alexander Volkov and Bethany Routledge will perform at the Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre, 2302 Bridge Rd., from 2-4 p.m., to help raise money for the non-profit's scholarship fund. Tickets cost $20 for adults and $10 for children. They can be purchased at the door. Zhu, 9, and Wu, 15, are both pianists. They each placed first in their age category at the CMC National Finals in Quebec last year. Jia, 15, and Volkov, 19, are violinists. They also placed first in their age category at the CMC National Finals in Quebec last year with Volkov winning the title of grand prize winner at the competition. Routledge is a mezzo soprano currently pursuing her Masters of Music at Western University in London, Ont., studying with Torin Chiles.
