www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, April 4, 2014 | 4 C4ST not satisfied with Safety Code 6 review by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff The local residents' association Canadians for Safe Technology (C4ST) has called a Health Canada review of existing safety limits for radiofrequency emissions a bad April Fool's Day joke. At Health Canada's request, the Royal Society of Canada (RSC) recently had a panel of experts review Safety Code 6, which sets recommended limits for safe human exposure to radiofrequency energy emitted from devices such as cellphones. The national academy was also asked to examine potential health risks of radiofrequency fields from wireless telecommunications devices. In its report, the panel concluded the balance of evidence at this time, does not indicate negative health effects from exposure to radiofre- quency energy below the limits recommended in Safety Code 6. It stated radiofrequency energy could possibly have an affect on cancer, but evidence has not yet established negative health effects. The findings did not sit well with Oakville's Frank Clegg, CEO of C4ST, whose group was created to educate Canadians and their policy makers about the dangers of exposure to unsafe levels of wireless radiation from technology. "The panel contrived to ignore important medical and scientific data," he said. "Rather than providing value to Health Canada, RSC's rubber stamp leaves Canadians exposed to unprecedented risk." Clegg argued China, Russia, Italy and Switzerland have guidelines 100 times safer than Safety Code 6. He charged the code was first written in 1979 and noted Canadians deserve safety guidelines that keep pace with technology. Oakville resident and C4ST member Wendy Perkins also weighed in on the report. "I think they totally did miss the boat in terms of significant exposure overall," she said. "We are flooded in RF (radiofrequency). We are absolutely engulfed by this radiation and it is going to take a toll. We are working with Health Canada and our hopes are they will look beyond this particular report and move for the protection of Canadians. It is time they looked at real science in the real world. The evidence-based scientific reports are coming in from around the world." The RSC panel acknowledged that research into many of the health effects associated with exposure to radiofrequency energy is ongoing and stated it is possible the findings in the future may alter the balance of evidence. It recommended Health Canada should continue to monitor the literature for emerging evi- dence and aggressively pursue scientific research aimed at clarifying the radiofrequency energycancer issue. The panel also recommended that Health Canada investigate the cases of individuals who are hypersensitive to radiofrequency energy with an aim to understand their condition and find ways to provide effective treatment and develop a procedure for the public to report suspected disease clusters and a protocol for investigating them. Panel members called on Health Canada to encourage the inclusion of basic education on nonionizing radiation in the curriculum of Canadian medical schools. Not good enough, argued Perkins.
