Get your hands dirty to clean up local green spaces Get your hands dirty for the 23rd annual Earth Week Clean Up this Saturday (April 26). The event, organized by the Oakville Community Centre for Peace, Ecology and Human Rights (OCCPEHR), invites residents out to help clean up the lakefront, parks, trails and other green space in their local community from 9-11 a.m. "The annual clean up encourages people to take care of their own neighbourhood and it has contributed to building the community by bringing neighbours together," said Stephen Dankowich, executive director of OCCPEHR. "In addition, it saves tens of thousands of dollars a year for the local taxpayer." He continued, the cleanup promotes "awareness and respect for biodiversity, local nature and our trails, parks and waterways. "We are beautifying the local natural environment, protecting wildlife and benefiting people's health while doing our best to encourage environmental activism in our schools and throughout our community," he said. Clean-up locations include Algrove Park, Bayshire Woods Park, Bronte Bluffs Park, Bronte Creek Provincial Park, Brookdale Park, Brook Valley Park, Busby Park, Castlebrook Park, Cornwall Road green spaces beginning near the Oakville & Milton Humane Society, Forest Glade Walkway, Fourteen Mile Creek Trail at Garth Webb Secondary School, Fourth Line and Upper Middle Road green spaces, Glenashton Drive Bridge, Glen Oak Creek Trail on Monastery Drive, Great Lakes Boulevard beginning at 10:30 a.m., Hogs Back Park, Hopedale Park, Iroquois Ridge Community Centre, Joshua Valley Park at the southeast sports field, Lakeside Park at the Oakville Museum, Langtry Park, Litchfield Park (meeting at the Trafalgar Presbyterian church), Market Square, Nottinghill Park, Oxford Park, Pondview Park, Postridge Park, Riverbank Park, River Glen Park, River Oaks Boulevard west of Trafalgar Road green spaces, Sheridan Valley Park, Spring Meadow Pond, Watercliffe Court Pond, Woodgate Woods Park and Woodhaven Park. This year's event will exclude seven forested areas that have been heavily impacted by the Dec. 22, 2013 ice storm. The locations affected by cancellations include Brook Valley Park, Indian Ridge Trail, Joshua Valley Park, Dunvegan Park, Nipegon Trail, Oakville Woods/Oakville Park and Sixteen Hollow Park because the Town of Oakville has deemed the areas to be too dangerous.
