ACT NOW!! UP TO More than 200 people and 23 teams took part in the inaugural Relay for Life Halton Friday at Appleby College. The event, which ran until midnight and not overnight, as other relays do, raised $55,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society's (CCS) Halton Unit -- $5,000 more than expected. CCS' Halton Unit fundraising coordinator Shelley Frank said the new format was well-received and still included a Survivors' Victory Lap and Luminary ceremony where candles are lit to honour someone who has won, or lost, their battle with cancer. "People had fun and that's what the event experience is about," said Frank of the condensed version of the CCS' original signature fundraiser. "It was much smaller than what we're used to having, but I think it really had that community feel. It was almost as if everyone knew each other." CCS Halton Unit is now gearing up for its next three events, which it hopes will raise $680,000 in total. · Relay for Life Burlington this Friday (June 6), 7 p.m.-7 a.m., at Bronte Creek Provincial Park, 1219 Burloak Dr. · Relay for Life Milton on June 13, 7 p.m.-7 a.m., at Milton Fairgrounds, 136 Robert St. · Relay for Life Oakville, June 20, 7 p.m.-7 a.m., at Sts.
