Anyone who has any of the above to spare as Thanksgiving approaches -- no matter how slight -- is urged to give to Oakville's Fareshare Food Bank. That's where the annual Thanksgiving Food Drive will run from Saturday, Sept. 29 to Sunday, Oct. 14. And though the food bank holds drives at Christmas and Easter, it's the Thanksgiving effort which collects the bulk of the annual stock Fareshare -- and needy Oakvillians -- counts on for the entire year. "Our Thanksgiving food drive is the most important drive of the year. I know from experience that at least 55 per cent of the food we use all year comes out of the Thanksgiving food drive," said Fareshare's volunteer director Dudley Clarke. Fareshare Food Bank is located at 1240 Speers Rd., Unit 6 -- between Third and Fourth Lines -- and has been operating since 1988. Run entirely by volunteers, it receives no government funding and this year it is averaging visits from 317 families per month -- the same as last year and up significantly from 302 visits per month in 2005. Fareshare serves families that represent about 1,000 people -- half of whom are children, said Clarke. To do that job over the next year, Clarke is hoping Fareshare will benefit from the broader publicity surrounding food drives at Thanksgiving and the generosity of the season. So when it comes to food, money and time, right now, Fareshare needs them all. Volunteers are sought to help with the drive. Students can gain community service hours -- by handing out food drive bags at the Real Canadian Superstore throughout the drive. Three-hour shifts are available, more if desired.
