C 6 - The Oakville Beaver, W e d n e sd a y June 5, 2002 Oakville junior tennis tourney deadline this Sunday The outdoor tennis season begins with a bang as the pros lunge and glide around the red clay of Roland Garros in the French Open while the groundskeepers apply one last intensive fertiliz er treatment to the lawns at Wimbledon in preparation for the All-England Championships. Nestled in between these two classic contests is O akville's own annual dust-up of junior ten nis talent. Once again this year. Bronte Tennis Club w ill host O ak ville's junior tennis champi onships on the weekend of June 14-16. with some matches scheduled at Wallace Park Tennis Club. Deadline for entry is Sunday, June 9, 8 p.m. Entries can be mailed or dropped off at either club. The tourney is open to boys and girls, under10. under-12. under-14, under-16 and under-18 who live in Oakville or play at an Oakville ten nis club. Last year there were more than 100 entries in the hotly contested draw. Current champions are Erin Radford and W illy Piotrowski (U-10), Laura Horning and Mike Syer (U-12). Lindsay Bennett and Alex Spiro (U-14). Samantha Schnobel (U-16) and Sarah Homing (U-18). Adrian Tollstam holds both U-16 and U-18 age-class championships. Once again this year, matches w ill consist of 8-game pro-sets in the main draw, expanding to best-of-three regular sets in the finals, except in the U-10 age groups which w ill continue to play pro-sets for the duration of the championships. There w ill be a consolation draw for those who do not win their first round matches. A Saturday afternoon players' barbecue is included in the $10 entry fee plus an opportuni ty to win prizes and trophies. Krishnamurthy was Princeton's lone representative in the 2002 N C A A Division 1 W'omen's tennis champi onships earlier this spring, bowing out 6-4. 6-2 to Wake Forest's Janet Bergman in the first round. Krishnamurthy was recently unani mously selected to the first-team AllIvy. She also received second-team AllIvy recognition for doubles with partner Avantika Bhargava. The Oakville native posted a 22-7 overall record at first singles for Princeton Tigers, including a 6-1 mark during the Ivy League season. She was named Ivy League player and rookie of the year in 2000. but missed most of last season with an injury. Shulaeva is one of Canada's best up and coming talents.
