McCusker · Oakville Beaver Theresa Nielsen holds up the latest issue of Life & Fashion featuring h er on the cover. Chance meeting turns receptionist into Life & Fashion cover girl By Wilma Blokhuis BEAVER FOCUS EDITOR Little did part-time reception ist Theresa Nielsen expect to be invited to model for a glossy magazine. She hadn't modeled since age 16, and hadn't given the fashion world much thought after finding that the mall fashion show and bridal show circuit somewhat daunting. "I was with an agency, and they were always pressuring me to lose weight or maintain a cer tain weight." Theresa didn't need the aggravation - nor does she need that kind o f advice. The five-foot eight-inch blonde was approached to model in a fashion shoot for Life & Fashion when its publisher. Carlo Greco, happened to visit Beaver publisher Ian Oliver. "He asked Ian if I would be available, and willing, to pose for a fashion shoot, and lan gave him my name." Theresa agreed to pose. She appears in a `button dress' on the front cover of the most recent issue, and inside in the same dress as part of an advertisement. And, she appears another five times in the magazine in its Real People feature where two work ing women were asked to model clothing. Theresa is shown modeling a mahogany sheer mink coat, a fur lined lux jacket, black suit, oneshoulder silk jersey dress, and a `Matador Jack' - a lace jacket with hand braided flowers with purple pants. Theresa modeled clothing created by Pat McDonagh. a top Canadian designer. Jewelry to accent the clothing was designed by Trish Rogers and Collette Harmon. Her hair was styled at Fiorio's o f Richmond Hill, and at Swartzcopf in Toronto. The photographs were taken last October at Studio 99 in Toronto, and at Harbourfront. "It was an experience," she says, "something to always cher ish." Theresa divides her time between working part-time in accounting and reception at the Oakville Beaver, and her parttime university studies. "I'm available to model on the side, but I don't want to make it a career. "The magazine has asked me to model again." Life & Fashion bills itself as Canada's Lifestyle and Fashion Quarterly, and is available at Chapters and Indigo. Cancer society seeks volunteers for April campaign "You can help - don't just donate, participate." This is what the Oakville Unit of Canadian Cancer Society's residential campaign co-chairs Carol Gordon and Cindy Popp are asking Oakville citizens to do in an urgent recruitment plea for door-to-door canvassers as well as area, zone, and team captains. This year, 1,500 canvassers take part in the annual campaign, raising money that directly affects local cancer patients and their families. Of the money raised, 51 per cent goes to research. Because o f the success rate in remis sions and cures these past 10 years, more and more survivors are giving hope to others that with con tinued support for research dollars this dreaded disease can be eradicated. In addition to research, 32 per cent of the money raised will be slated for Oakville commu nity programs such as gas reimbursement for the 33 volunteer drivers who take patients to and from treatment centres. Other programs such as educational programs to industries and business, on topics such as diet, non-smoking and health, are available locally. If you are interested in canvassing, or any other volunteer opportunities, call the Oakville Unit of the Cancer Society at 905-845-5231, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Front Row Centre raffle winners The winners of a raffle held by Front Row Centre, volunteer fundraising arm of the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts, are as follows: 1st, Marie Sutcliffe of Oakville, two return flights to Florida donated by Flight Centre; 2nd, Brenda Warsnop.
