C6 ·The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday April 3, 2002 National Guitar Workshop returns to Appleby College Sheridan Glass Studio works on display By Sherry McGratten SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER The National Guitar Workshop (NGW ) will be holding classes at its sin gle, Canadian location at Appleby College in Oakville for the sixth year in a row. Every year NGW students have the opportunity to train with world class artists who perform seminars, clinics and concerts at the NGW. This year Andy Summers, of the Police, Larry Coryell, a jazz artist, John Knowles, a Nashville fingerstyle player. Harry Jacobson, a blues player and David Sinclair, who plays for Sarah McLachlan. will be featured. The NGW offers guitar, drums, bass and keyboard courses that accommodate all levels of ability. Minor courses such as songwriting. improvisation and slide guitar are avail able. A variety of musical styles are offered, which include, rock. jazz, blues, acoustic and classical. Classes run from July 21 to 26. Enrolment is open to anyone 13 years old and over. According to the NGW course cata log. 50 per cent of students are under the age of 18, 10 per cent are in the 18 to 29 year age group and 40 per cent are between the ages of 30 to 80. The NGW has been in business for 19 years with eight North American campus es. The Toronto Campus was established 10 years ago. In past years the NGW has had worldrenowned players such as Canadian rock er, Rik Emmett, and popular jazz player, Jody Fisher. "A typical day at the NGW consists of five hours of instruction time (hands on theory, ear training, etc.). an afternoon clinic, ensemble rehearsals and evening concerts." says Brian Murray, Director of the National Guitar Workshop in Oakville. Murray describes the NGW program as " unique" because of the different styles of music instruction offered. Tuition is $750 and includes all cours es. meals and accommodation. The annual Sheridan College Glass Studio Graduate and Faculty Exhibition runs from April 6-21 at Material Matters. 741 Queen St. W.. Toronto.
