Wlvle mired in technical approvals, the Planaing and Development Council gave the nod Monday night to environmental studies and assessments of the northern icreage. They are expected to be complete by the end of this year. Officially entitled Official Plan Amendment 198 (OPA 198), the debate over the currently designated agricultural land north of Dundas Street has sparked a long standing battle between environmen tal activists who say the area should be protected, and developers who see mas sive untapped residential growth lying there. The Town is in the initial stages of hir ing environmental consultants and engag ing the public in the process of developing an Environmental Strategic Plan. But Monday night the council also sought funds to mount a legal defence to the Ontario Municipal Board (O M B) against challenges from developers. Following a meeting held behind closed doors, to discuss dollar figures, the Planning and Development Council approved an undisclosed amount of money be used to pay for legal fees. Should residential development occur in northern Oakville future residents of the area will share in paying these legal bills. But in the meantime. The Growth and Environmental Protection Committee was created on the spur of the moment in early March by Ward 1 Councillor Kevin Flynn. Neither its mandate nor membership were ever outlined.
