This play, written by Shelagh Stephenson and produced by special arrangement with Dramatists' Play Service Inc., skillfully charts the joyous and painful territory of family relationships with insight and compassion. Featuring a cast drawn from all over the region, The Memory o f Water reunites three sisters on the occasion o f their mother's death. They each recall their mother's role in their childhood but find that their personal grievances have coloured their memories. The story mixes sardonic humour with strongly felt emo tion, as it examines what normal people do in stressful situ ations. It promises to make audience members laugh, cry, and be shocked as the three sisters reminisce. Tickets are $17 (half price for students and seniors on Jan. 23) and are available by visiting or calling the Oakville Cen tre box office at 130 Navy St., 905-815-2021, weekdays from noon to 5 p.m., Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., or two hours prior to a performance. Curtain time for all shows is 8 p.m. OAS offers classes in ancient art form - embroidery Embroidery is an art form as ancient as the needle. People of all ages and cultures have always enjoyed decorating materials. Families and museums have long treasured embroideries from the past. For the first time, the Oakville Art Society (OAS) will be offering lessons in painting with needle and thread, beginning Tuesday, Jan. 15. Even if you have never threaded a needle, you can embroider. Beginning with a simple design, you will learn several stitches useful for outlining, filling, and embellishing. Lessons will also include the use of stitch es for particular effects, mixing colour with threads, and creating designs suitable for hand embroidery. Curiosity, patience, and sharp scissors are all you need to bring to this course. The instructor, Jane Coryell, specializes in small embroideries that illustrate stories, songs, and rhymes, adding a button or charm related to the image. Coryell exhibits with the Oakville Stitchery Guild as well as with national and provincial juried shows. She has taught basic embroidery to beginners, aged 6 to 60. As part of Oakville's Autumn Festival o f Art, 2000 and 2001, Coryell gave storefront stitchery lessons and demonstrations in the window of McCutcheon's Camera Shop on Lakeshore Road. During Oakville's Fibre Arts Festival 2002 this fall, she will have a solo exhibition at the Abbozzo Gallery. For lessons in embroidery, contact the OAS, 560 Bronte Rd, at 905-827-5711.
