Canadian-born policeman started Crime Stoppers in 1976 Although Crime Stoppers began in the United States, the program was actually started by a Canadian-bom police offi cer. John MacCleese was a member of the Albuquerque, New Mexico police depart ment and in 1976 his investiga tion of a murder/robbery was going nowhere. He came up with a plan which was cleared by his supe riors to run an article in the local paper calling for anony mous witnesses and to offer a reward from his own pocket. As fate would have it, an important lead originated from a call and within 24 hours MacCleese had solved an unre lated rape. In 72 hours, he'd solved the murder. Since 1983 in Ontario, 54,917 arrests have been made thanks to Crime Stoppers, including those involved in the murder of Toronto Police Constable Bill Hancox. A total of 96,598 cases were also cleared as a result. Since coming on line in 1988, Crime Stoppers of Haiton has received 5,530 tips which have resulted in 525 arrests and cleared 1,238 cases. A total of $1.1 million worth of property has been recovered and $2.7 million worth of nar cotics has been recovered. Globally, Crime Stoppers has more than one thousand chapters in 17 countries and since its inception has led to the recovery of more than $1.2 bil lion in stolen property and the seizure of in excess of $3.7 bil lion in illegal drugs.
