The first hour-long walk begins at 1:30 at the society's 110 King St. office, with the second walk following at 2 p.m. -- refreshments will be served. Proceeds from the walks will go to the Stephen Lewis Foundation, which supports community-level organizations providing care and support to women, orphans, grandmothers and others living with HIV/ AIDS. Since 2003, the foundation has funded more than 1,100 initiatives, partnering with more than 300 community-based organizations in the 15 African countries hardest hit by the pandemic. The grassroots groups counsel and educate about HIV prevention, care and treatment; distribute food, medication and other necessities; reach the sick and vulnerable through home-based health care; help orphans and vulnerable children access education and work through their grief; and support grandmothers caring for their orphaned grandchildren. Bronte Grandmothers for Africa is one of more than 240 Canadian grandmother groups that make up the Stephen Lewis Foundation's Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign. These grandmothers and grand-others raise awareness, build solidarity and mobilize support in Canada for African grandmothers and the orphaned children in their care.
