Thousands headed back to classes Tuesday by Michael Gregory Oakville Beaver Staff 7 | Thursday, September 4, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Tens of thousands of Oakville students from Kindergarten to those entering their graduating year of high school shuffled out the door Tuesday morning for the first day of classes. Between the Halton public and Catholic school boards, approximately 91,000 (60,000 in the public system and 31,000 from the Catholic board) are enrolled in elementary and secondary schools across the region. "Our staff have been busy getting our schools and classrooms ready for the new school year, and we look forward to another outstanding year ahead for all," said the Halton Catholic District School Board's (HCDSB) Director of Education Paula Dawson. The Halton District School Board's (HDSB) Director of Education David Euale similarly welcomed parents and students. "We are confident the enthusiasm for learning in our youngest students will be nurtured and sustained by our dedicated staff as they progress through each grade level," he said. The HCDSB is now offering full-day Kindergarten programs in all of its 45 elementary schools, while the public board added 18 schools to its Kindergarten program this year, bringing the total to 74. Euale said the completion of the rollout means 7,500 junior and senior Kindergarten students are enrolled this September. Supporting the HDSB students are 4,017 teachers, 1,943 non-teaching and support staff, as well as 216 principals and vice-principals across 103 elementary and secondary schools. While the Catholic board saw a 2.7 per cent hike in enrollment, the HDSB noted student enrollment increased 3.2 per cent and the administration completed expansions at 11 facilities, in addition to adding 55 portables to school sites, to accommodate the growth. Students and staff this year will have access to 18,000 computer workstations, 4,000 Chromebooks and 5,000 iPads. Of those devices 4,000 will be made available to students requiring additional learning assistance.
