Toronto police investigating if escaped convict was harboured locally after jail break by Michael Gregory Oakville Beaver Staff U.S. fugitive arrested without incident in Etobicoke If we gather any evidence as a result of our investigation that he was being assisted or harboured by friends or family then we will be seeking criminal charges. The search for him has now ended with an arrest, but now we are definitely going to look into where he's been, and what he's been up to, and who may have been assisting him. Det.-Sgt. Wayne Banks 13 | Friday, September 12, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com A U.S. fugitive who fled from Halton police in Oakville Tuesday, was arrested yesterday (Thursday) afternoon in Toronto, police said. The Toronto police Fugitive Squad confirmed to the Beaver that Anthony Maiorano was arrested without incident at around 1 p.m. near The Queensway and Park Lawn Road in the west Toronto suburb of Etobicoke. The fugitive came to police attention Tuesday in Oakville when he was travelling in a white Mercedes SUV that was pulled over on Tuesday afternoon by Halton police for a routine traffic stop near Sixth Line and Upper Middle Road in Oakville. The 32-year-old convicted felon fled into a nearby townhouse complex and an ensuing search by Halton police and members of Toronto Fugitive Squad failed to locate the suspect. Arrested without incident Det.-Sgt. Wayne Banks of Toronto police said Maiorano was arrested on the street in Toronto, but could not comment on the specifics of how he had been found. "With the public's assistance, but also the result of some excellent police work, was later released. Banks said they would be continuing the investigation and charges could be laid against anyone who assisted Maiorano during his time in Canada. "If we gather any evidence as a result of our investigation that he was being assisted or harboured by friends or family then we will be seeking criminal charges," he said. Roots in the GTA The felon hailed from the Greater Toronto Area 20 years ago and attended Caledon Central Public School in Caledon Village. He is believed to have moved from the Caledon area in the late 1980s or early '90s. Before his arrest, Maiorano was listed among Georgia's Department of Corrections' `Most Wanted Fugitives.' Banks also noted Maiorano was arrested wearing a different set of clothes than the Facebook sweatshirt he was seen sporting in Oakville on Tuesday. Investigation continues He is scheduled to appear in a Toronto court today (Friday) in regards to an extradition warrant. "The search for him has now ended with an arrest, but now we are definitely going to look into where he's been, and what he's been up to, and who may have been assisting him," Banks said. Felon considered dangerous by police Maiorano is, according to police, considered violent and dangerous and has a criminal record dating to 2003, including charges for drug trafficking. Halton police said the female driver of the SUV was placed in custody on Tuesday, but we were able to locate Mr. Maiorano up on The Queensway and he was arrested without incident," Banks said. Toronto police Fugitive Squad led the investigation with the assistance of the R.O.P .E. Squad, Halton police and the Department of Justice's International Assistance Group. Maiorano had been serving a 20-year prison sentence for robbery and aggra- vated assault in a Savannah, Ga. prison, before fleeing in April. He had been given a oneday permit, but never returned to the facility. Police were unaware Maiorano had made his way to Canada before Tuesday's sighting, which caused two area schools, the independent Rotherglen and public school Munn's, to be put in hold and secure.
