OCF sets sights on 20/20 vision with contest by Abigail Cukier Special to the Beaver 9 | Friday, September 19, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com The Oakville Community Foundation (OCF) is celebrating 20 years of supporting local charities -- but doesn't want the milestone to be about the OCF . "We want to celebrate what the community is about. We can always learn from others and want to hear from the community about what they want," said Sarah McPherson, director of communications and development for OCF . Until Oct. 15, the OCF wants community members to post a 60-second video sharing what they think is needed to create a great place to live, work and grow -- their "20/20 vision for Oakville." Everyone is invited to visit 2020.theocf.org, record a video, post it and share it with family, friends and coworkers. Participants can challenge others to do it too. "We want to hear people's We hope Oakville is better from what we, and those all around us, are doing," McPherson added. Submit and post a 20/20 video at 2020.theocf.org before Oct. 15. Participants can share their video with friends and family, who can vote between Oct. 16-19. The top three 20/20 visions, as chosen by the community, will receive prizes: · First place -- Best Buy $200 gift card. · Second place -- Longo's $100 gift card. · Third place -- eight movie tickets (each with a large popcorn and soft drink) at a Cineplex Theatre. CONCRETE ideas and we are hoping it will engage people too," said McPherson. "It gets the conversation going. I suspect we will hear things we don't know and it's an opportunity for everyone to see the common goals and where the needs are." The OCF's role is to understand the needs of the community and work with its donors to help support them. In 2013, the foundation and its fundholders granted more than $1.9 million and issued more than 350 grants locally and throughout Ontario and other provinces. A current project is Homeward Bound Halton (HBH). Working with Home Suite Hope (HSH), Sheridan College and Halton Region, the OCF is funding five struggling single moms to go back to school full-time. "Oakville has incredible resources," McPherson said. "It is great when we can work together and put something like this in place.
