The tailgate, by the way, is lockable. And, on the same theme, for added security, a three-piece rigid cargo cover made of interlocking PRO-TEC com posite panels protects the cargo box and its contents. As a nice afterthought, two topbox storage compartments on either side of the cargo box provide a total of 4.6 cubic feet of weather-resistant, lockable storage space. Perfect for jumper cables, tools, windshield washer fluid bottles, and all the usual floor and back-of-the-seat pickup truck clutter. Other thoughtful finishing touches include: the usual tie down points and cargo divider slots; grab handles and bumper steps built into the rear bumper for an easy climb up into the cargo box; a standard rub ber cargo box mat; and a cargo box light built into the side wall. For driver and passenger security and comfort, the Avalanche offers full-size four door access, a spacious cabin and a standard complement of equipment - front and side impact airbags, air conditioning, power group, heated mirrors, four-wheel disc ABS brakes, auto headlamps, foglamps, PASSLOCK remote keyless entry, AM/FM/CD and more. The Avalanche is available in rear wheel-drive or 4WD versions and in 1500 weight class (a 2500 model will debut later this summer). There is one trim level with available option packages and a special North Face Edition for those who have money burning a hole in their pockets. Under the hood, as tested, the Avalanche harnesses a VORTEC 5300 pushrod V8 that pumps out 285 hp @ 5200 rpm and 325 lbft of peak torque @ 4000 rpm. The V8 pulls well enough to give the standard heavyduty trailering package a towing capacity rating of from 3085 kg (6800 lbs) to 3764 kg (8300 lbs), depending on model selec tion. An 8.1 L V8 will power theheavy duty 2500 model. Regardless of model selection however, all of these innovations and amenities are wrapped in a stylish package with almost customized aftermarket flavor. My tester came in trademark Sunset Orange Metallic paint with gray cladding. A few of the older generation might scowl and find the aggressive skidplate and rollbar styling with acres of cladding to be a little "over-the-top" but the overall consen sus during my test drive seemed to be a uni versal "thumbs-up" for the funky, feel-good exterior. Get used to it. With the copycat debut of the Avalanche's sibling - the Cadillac Escalade EXT, the advent of Nissan's industrial-style Frontier, Ford's Tonka truck con cept explorations and the Power Wagon and MD 80 influences of a future Dodge Dakota, we can expect more prod ucts with playful "toy truck" styling yet to come. The 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche starts at $39,315. As tested, my 4WD model started at $42,560 and came with a full load of extra luxo crap that included offroad and pre ferred equipment packages, sunroof, leather and enough bells and whistles to push the price up into the $50K range. Not exactly cheap but keep in mind the all-inclusive content level and the combined pickup truck/SUV reconfigurable ver satility of this allin-one vehicle. And keep in mind that this premium truck offers all these newfangled fea tures in a package blending ground breaking technolo gy and innovation with classic Chevy Truck heritage and reliability. And does it very well. Which is proba bly why the Automobile Journalist Association of Canada (AJAC) chose the Chevrolet Avalanche as the best new pickup truck in Canada for 2002.
