www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, October 2, 2014 | 32 Perfect Paniccia believes she, and Hornets, can still improve By Herb Garbutt Oakville Beaver staff When Nicole Paniccia was looking to transfer from the University of Connecticut after her sophomore season, she visited several schools. Tagging along on those trips was her 15-year-old sister, Daniela, who, like her older sister, was a goalie. Nicole would eventually settle on Penn State University, where she joined a fledgling women's hockey program. But she wasn't the only one impressed by the visit to Penn State. "It's funny, I remember dropping my sister off for that first visit," said Daniela Paniccia. "I remember looking around and thinking, `This is my dream school.'" It didn't take long before the feeling was mutual. While Nicole was on her way to earning the Nittany Lions' first MVP award, Penn State was also keeping an eye on Daniela, who was playing with the Oakville Hornets AA midgets. It saw her record three straight shutouts to help Oakville win the Bauer World Invite 16U AA tournament in Detroit. By Christmas of Nicole's first season, Penn State had already made an offer to Daniela, who was in Grade 10 at the time. While projecting the upside of a player who isn't likely to set foot at your school for three or four years can be a tricky business, Daniela Paniccia is rewarding the Nittany Lions' faith. In three starts this season, Paniccia has yet to allow a goal. Her three shutouts are a big reason why the Oakville Hornets are the last remaining undefeated team in the Provincial Women's Hockey League, with a 5-0 mark. Paniccia ran her shutout string to 170 minutes Saturday, backstopping the Hornets to a 2-0 victory over the Stoney Creek Sabres by stopping all 25 shots she faced. Including a shutout period in relief of Nikki Cece, who was injured last week, Paniccia has stopped all 81 shots she's faced. The 17-year-old, who also has two provincial high school hockey silver medals (2012 with Appleby College and 2013 with Loyola) to her credit, said having her PWHL rookie season under her belt has helped her relax. "I'm trying to stay calm and collected," the 17-year-old said. "I think the biggest thing is not being afraid to make a mistake. And I've got a great group in front of me that helps me to be confident." In Saturday's win Madison Field sank her former team. The second defeat was a 4-3 doubleovertime loss Saturday to the Ontario Junior Hockey League's lone unbeaten team, the 7-0 Trenton Golden Hawks. Christian Rajic's power-play goal midway through the third period tied the game 3-3 and gave Blades fans their first look at the league's new overtime format. Five minutes of four-on-four hockey failed to produce a winner so instead of what would have been a shootout last season, the teams played five minutes of three-on-three. Or in this case 2:15 before Trenton's Michael Hornets' net, Field's first period goal proved to be all Oakville needed to beat Stoney Creek, the team Field played for the past two seasons. She also drew an assist on Amy Curlew's empty-net goal, giving Field nine points, tops in the PWHL. Two nights earlier, Jazz Kennedy had a pair of goals in a 6-0 win over Brampton. Field, Emma Maltais and Jessica Geddes each had a goal and an assist. Loren Gabel also scored while Curlew had three assists and Jamie Bourbonnais had two. Paniccia had a relatively easy night, needing to make just seven saves for the shutout. But despite a start that already has the Hornets a third of the way to last season's 15 wins, she said the important thing to do to sustain their early success is to simply focus on their next opponent. "It's a great feeling seeing everyone come together," she said. "Everybody's really clicking, but we can't get ahead of ourselves. We really just have to play each team and give our best effort." And who better to lead the Hornets than the player who long ago secured her future at Penn State, but continues to raise the bar. "It's nice to know, it's one less thing to worry about, but from a hockey standpoint, it doesn't affect me at all," she said. "I'm never satisfied. Even though that's looked after, I don't feel comfortable. I want to keep getting better." It would be tough to top her perfect start this season, but the good news for the Hornets is she won't start at Penn State until 2016. That will give them a front row seat to see just how much better she can be over the next two seasons. Oakville's next game is Tuesday, Oct. 7 against Cambridge at Joshua's Creek Arenas at 8 p.m. Siddall spoiled a 40-save effort by Blades goalie Daniel Mannella. Tanner Shaw scored his first goal as a Blade and Kamil Tkaczuk also scored for Oakville. Friday, the Blades fell 2-1 to the Cobourg Cougars, backed by Oakville native Austin Washkurak. He made 36 saves to outduel the Blades' own homegrown goalie, Brendan McGlynn, who stopped 28 shots. Rajic scored the Blades' lone goal while Cobourg had the lone goal of the third period to break a 1-1 tie. The losses dropped Oakville to 3-5-1. The Blades will host St. Michael's Friday at Sixteen Mile at 7:30 p.m. Sunday they will face a tough road test against Pickering (6-1-1).
