B2 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday July 10, 2002 A dream comes true for actor (Continued from page B1) While the Russian military consent ed to the production, it's a touchy issue for the survivors. "There's not too much known about it. the Russians tried to keep it a secret. I don't think the survivors were treated well afterw ards," Strugnell said, adding that Ford, too, influenced script re-writes. "People will go to see the movie because he's in it, so he wanted to make sure everything was as accurate as pos sible," he said. As for Strugnell's work prior to K19, the young actor has had "more than a thousand auditions" and has landed roles in numerous commercials, includ ing the recent London Life ad where he plays a young man who receives a letter from an architectural school that's actu ally for his dad. He's also appeared in commercials for Pizza Pockets, Bell, AT&T and more, along with Canadian television programs such as Traders, Jonovision and Ready or Not. H e's also had an agent for six years, which he secured through a lucky opportunity to m eet with a director who gave him a recom m en dation. As for landing a part in the major motion picture, Stnignell said the fact that it starred his idol made the experi ence even more thrilling. "I was in a scene with Harrison Ford -- now I can die a happy man," he said. K -19: The Widow Maker will be released in theatres on July 19. Austin Strugnell · Special to the Oakville Beaver An exterior shot of one of the sets from the upcoming film, K-19: The Widow M aker , which stars Harrison Ford but also includes Oakville actor Austin Strugnell. The set is located at a Halifax shipyard, but is meant to be a Russian naval dock, with propaganda on the nearby wall. The snow at the base of the wall is actually salt, and what appears to be a building is actually only a front. The three young men in the photo are cast members taking a break between shoots. Oakville's Joshua Close also had a small role in the production. Indian legend tells o f the spirit o f a great ch ief who rides a w hite stal lion guarding the ancient hunting and burial grounds along Bronte Creek. It is said that one day he will call upon spirit warriors to avenge the loss of native land and culture. This is the basis for the Tater Vox song, Darkland, one of more than a dozen songs on This Old H arbour Town. In fact, all 16 songs on the CD. Darkland were written and performed by people living in and around the Oakville community. The BronteSound Project is a grass roots arts development program. It cam e about when people with an interest in developing the arts in the com m u n ity heard the song D arkland. They arranged to meet with Randy Broten. It was Broten who had penned the lyrics for the song he co-wrote with his Bronte neighbour, Scott Mills. What resulted was a plan to create and fund a series of artistic projects that give participants the opportunity to exhibit their work and share in the revenues. This CD is the first of what BronteSound Project creative director, Broten, calls productions. Selections include a wide variety o f easy-listening music styles. A rtists such as Phantom star Sandra M argolese, new artists such as Ed M arion, and established pro fessionals like Caroline W iles are represented. One notable contribution is the instrumental. Bill Hill, by Bronte resi dent John Tofflemire, penned as a trib ute to the late Bronte com m unity leader. The BronteSound Project isn't lim iting itself to music com pilations, although a second music production is under consideration. In the next year, it's planning to sponsor benefit concerts, and promote theatre and stage plays. Broten says only local talent need apply. This Old Harbour Town is available from, the participating artists whenever they hold a concert or other perform ance and, online at www.brontesound.ca.
