www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, October 10, 2014 | 8 DiCenzo family donation in honour of parents by Bob Mitchell Special to the Beaver In honour of their late parents, an Oakville resident and his sisters have donated $1 million towards a Hamilton hospital's foundation. But Anthony DiCenzo is well aware of the importance of healthcare. Down the road another financial gift could be made to help the new Oakville hospital now under construction. "It's something we are certainly open to," said DiCenzo, a prominent land developer, who has lived in Oakville for more than 20 years, also building homes in the town as well as Hamilton. "Our donation to St. Joseph's doesn't close the door to other hospitals and other charities." DiCenzo and other family members were on hand Wednesday as their $1 million donation was presented to St. Joseph's Healthcare in Hamilton. Also in attendance were Oakville Mayor Rob Burton and Hamilton Mayor Bob Bratina. The money will be used for the hospital's new diagnostic imaging centre, which will now carry the name of the Antonio & Maria DiCenzo Diagnostic Imaging Centre. My sisters and I were all born there. And any significant illness, injury or medical event that I can recall, both happy and sad, happened Anthony DiCenzo inside the walls of this hospital," said DiCenzo, who along with his sisters Silvana and Rita attended the name unveiling. "From my grandmother's cardiac care to the 18 stitches I needed after a rough day in Kindergarten to the joyful births of my nieces and nephews. It all happened here." The hospital's foundation has been raising $25 million to support the renewal of the Diagnostic Imaging Centre and the construction of a stateof-the-art surgical centre at St. Joseph's Charlton Campus. "My sisters and I have faced the passing of both of our parents in just a few short years. Our mother in particular had a very rare form of cancer that went undiagnosed for several months after she first started noticing her symptoms," DiCenzo said. "We can't help but wonder if she'd had access to some of the state-of- the-art diagnostic imaging technology available now whether she might have been diagnosed sooner and we might have been able to enjoy a few more precious months or years with her had she had a quicker diagnosis and speedier treatment.." Sera Filice-Armenio, the Foundation president and CEO, said the centre with its new name will provide a lasting legacy to the lives of two Hamiltonians, who built a life, a successful business and a family in the city. St. Joseph's Diagnostic Imaging Centre performs more than 200,000 procedures each year, making it one of the busiest departments at the hospital, she said. "To have experienced the loss of your parents and turned that loss into a desire to help save and enhance the lives of others through your philanthropy is a demonstration of the beauty of the human spirit and the strength of the values your parents instilled in you," hospital president Dr. David Higgins told the family at Wednesday's event. The DiCenzo name is well-known in the housing construction and land development industry throughout southern Ontario. From building a single home while working the night shift at the steel factory, Antonio DiCenzo became one of the largest land developers and new home builders in the Greater Hamilton Area. see Family on p.17 FALL IS A VERY IMPORTANT TIME FOR YOUR LAWN!
