The Oakville Beaver, W e d n e s d a y F e b ru a ry 27, 2002 - D3 Olympic gold medalist in action in Oakville this Saturday night Oakville will get a chance to see one of Canada's gold medal hockey Olympians in action Saturday night. Fresh off her triumph in helping the Canadian women's national hockey team to a gold medal over the United States, Therese Brisson is set to arrive home on Friday, and to suit up for her Ice Bears team at Ice Sports on Saturday night. The Ice Bears, who play in the National W omen's Hockey League, are based out of M ississauga but have quite an Oakville connection. They're owned by Bill Metcalfe, head coach is Steve Blundy and the assistant coach is Gary Carr, Oakville MPP and speaker o f the house -- all of Oakville. They have always played at least one game of their schedule in Oakville and it's a great coincidence that their next Oakville date will include the first post Olympic appearance o f their Olympian, Therese Brisson. Fittingly, the game is one rescheduled from earlier in the season, due to Olympic preparation commitments for a number of the players. Metcalfe said he has talked to Brisson by cell phone in Salt Lake. At the NWHL games, autographs are always available after the game. It's actually the last game of the regular season for the Ice Bears, who have sealed up second place. They'll use the game against the last place Durham Telus, who have missed the playoffs, to tune up for a home and home play off series against Brampton. The two met in the first round of last year's playoffs with Brampton winning. Saturday's game starts at 7:30 p.m. at Ice Sports Oakville. See Friday's Beaver for a feature on Therese Brisson.
