The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday October 15, 2003 - A 3 North Oakville preferred Sullivan to Chudleigh By Jason Misner SPECIAL T O THE BEAVER Ron Kuzyk · Oakville Beaver FURNACE PROBLEMS: T he House W arm ings store in downtow n Oakville becam e a little hot to handle Tuesday m orning when a furnace problem sent thick sm oke billowing out of the shop. Because of the older architecture unique to downtown, the O akville Fire D epartm ent responded in force in case any fire m igrated between buildings. Fortunately the blaze was contained an d sm oke was the only m ajo r problem . While Halton Hills voters proved instrumental to Halton Tory MPP Ted C hudleigh's re-election, he didn't receive any favours from Oakville. The Halton riding race ended up being a two-way contest between Chudleigh and Liberal challenger Barbara Sullivan, who enjoyed her greatest success in the Oakville portion o f the riding where she received 400 more votes than Chudleigh. Sullivan was a form er Halton Centre MPP between 1987 and 1995. O f the 28,112 official votes she gar nered in the election, Halton Hills accounted for 24 per cent o f her total support. A close examination of the October 2 provincial election polling results for the Halton riding reveals that of the 33,610 votes Chudleigh received to capture a third consecutive seat, about 31 per cent came from Halton Hills. The large Halton riding is com prised o f Halton Hills, Milton and northern portions of Burlington and Oakville. The kind of response Chudleigh received from Halton Hills isn't sur prising given the area is largely rural, said Henry Jacek, a political scientist with McMaster University. He said the Tory platform speaks to a lot of people who are involved in the farming indus try, which is big business in Ontario. In 1995, the Mike Harris-led Tories introduced legislation that prohibits farm workers from joining a union. Aside from Halton Hills, the rest of the riding proved to be a tough, close race. In Milton, votes for Chudleigh made up about 26 per cent o f his total support, while for Ms Sullivan. Milton voters made up 25 per cent. O f the approximately 121,000 eligi ble voters in the Halton riding, 70,079 turned out to vote on election night. That amounted to a 54 per cent voter turnout, which was slightly above the Ontario average of 52 per cent. Oakville's oldest McDonlad's closes After 33 years of doing busi ness, Oakville's oldest McDonald's franchise recently locked its doors and boarded up its windows, leav ing only a small notice thanking customers. The McDonald's location, at 124 Lakeshore Rd. W,, served the neighbourhood since 1970, and stuck with a more old-fashioned store. With outdoor seating under the shade of large trees, it added a drive-through several years ago in an attempt to update its services and bring in more customers. Ron Christianson, public rela tions representative for McDonald's Canada, said the closing of the store is "not an unusual thing." The Lakeshore McDonald's near K err Street was recently closed. After taking a look at the demo graphics in town, and the business in Oakville, Christianson said, they realized the store was no longer in the main ebb and flow of customer traffic. "It's not that this store wasn't performing," he said. "It's just that it made the best business sense to focus on our other stores." Darlene Bryans, owner/operator of the Lakeshore location, also runs five other McDonald's franchises in Oakville.
