Johnathan Silver Dundas Street Canadian Tire takes home the hardware By Angela Blackburn OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Mark Healy, president and associate dealer o f the Canadian Tire at Trafalgar Road and Dundas Street has picked up a major award less than a year after his store opened. On the weekend, Healy's store received the Canadian Reiai\ Hardware Association's 2002 Hardware Merchandising Award for Best Large Surface Retailer. "We were thrilled. I believe it was the first Canadian Tire that ever won the award," said Healy, Monday. The 42-year-old, fatherof-four, picked up the award Sunday at a luncheon held at the Canadian Hardware and Building Materials Show at the National Trade Centre at Toronto's Exhibition Place. Healy and his Oakville store will be featured on the cover of Hardware Merchandising magazine's March/April edition. "The judges were espe cially impressed with all the extra things (Healy) and (his) staff do to make the store stand out," said Rob Gerlsbeck, editor of Hardware Merchandising. The award was welcome news for Healy, who opened his store last April, but met some setbacks over the course of his first year. One of those setbacks included the failure of a plan to build a skating rink in a portion of the store's large parking lot. Though Healy had the support of many in town, the plans ran into red tape at the Town of Oakville's Committee of Adjustment. H e a ly is also in the process o f selling a used Zamboni from the former Maple Leaf Gardens because the rink failed to materialize. His Zamboni was among the "differences" that made his store stand out in the recent awards competition. The straight forward organization of his store was another. The award is a nice recog nition after 10 years on the job, said Healy. The former investment banker saw his career in the financial world take him from Toronto to Los Angeles -- before he decided to set down roots with Canadian Tire and open his own franchise. That first franchise was in Deep River, Ontario, located between Ottawa and North Bay. From there, Healy moved on to a store in Alliston, Ontario. When the franchise oppor tunity in Oakville surfaced, the Mississauga-raised Healy wasted no time. "Franchises are offered to dealers based on their track record and experience," explained Healy. He described Canadian Tire as a "good company" and a "great franchise opportuni ty-" The reason the investment banker traded the high-rises of Toronto and LA for the aisles of a hardware store? "I'd always wanted my own store and it was a chance to get away from the big city," he said. With a lifelong exposure to Mississauga and Oakville, Healy said being here is like being home. "Hopefully, this will be my last stop," he said. Healy is quick to share his success in winning the recent award with his 140 staff members. His Oakville Canadian Tire is classified as an "A Box", much larger than his first franchises that were dubbed C Box stores. Healy entered the store in the competition on the advice of a Hardware Merchandising magazine employee, who happens to frequent the store located at 400 Dundas St. E. -- beside Longo's.
