Harrison Smith · Oaln ille Beaver Reverend C harlie Jo rd a n blesses the cornerstone of M ary, M other of God d u ring a cerem ony Sunday. The new C atholic church is scheduled to open in November. Parishioners have been attending weekend m ass a t St. M arguerite d'Youville elem entary school since 19%. Parishioners who have met in a school gymnasium for seven years for weekend mass will soon be able to worship in their own church. Mary. Mother of God parish ioners have been attending week end mass at St. Marguerite d 'Youville elementary school since 19% and their new church on the comer of Northridge Trail and Postridge Drive will be open for worship in November. A, blessing of the cornerstone was held Sunday and it was the first time many parishioners saw the future face of the new church. Rev. Charlie Jordan said everyone is excited over the new building. "People are very enthusiastic. They've waited seven years for this." The new church, which siLs on a four-acre lot, will be able to sup port 1,040 people. Approximately 800 people attend the three week- end masses now. It will become the ninth Catholic church in Oakville. The new parish was established by the community after St Michael's Roman Catholic Church reached capacity, said Rev. Charlie Jordan. "It was a growing communi ty," he said. The new site was chosen for its accessibility and prime location. Northridge Park sits directly across the street from the new parish and will be invaluable for church events, said the reverend. Rev. Jordan, who was ordained in 1981 and has served at parishes in Waterloo, Burlington and Brantford, has been the pastor at Mary, Mother of God since it was formed in 19%. Almost complete, the build ing's main feature is ample light. Windows surround the central worship area and a skylight beams directly onto the future location of the baptismal font, which will be placed at the church's entrance. The altar will be at the far wall at the center of the room and to its left will be a tower that will hold the blessed sacrament. He explained that not only were the parishioners and build ing committee valuable in the construction of the new church, the architectural designers, Larkin, were of great help as well as the Diocese of Hamilton "for their support both financially and with advice." The granite cornerstone, which reads, "Established 19%, Con structed 2003," will be placed in front of the building so it is clear ly visible to those entering the church. A time capsule was also placed behind the cornerstone with the parishioners' names and accompanying photographs. The official blessing and dedi cation of the church will be held on Jan. 1 2004, the actual parish feast day of Mary. Mother of God. Bishop Anthony Tonnos will offi ciate.
