The Oakville Beaver, F rida y A u g u s t 22, 2003 - 1 7 Halton water ban continues Halton Region's outdoor water ban remains in effect. The ban came into effect on Aug. 15 during the massive power outage in Ontario and will continue until the Province's power supply has been stabilized. Outdoor water bans are usually implemented during unseasonably dry weather conditions when heavy water use occurs, however, this is not the situation in Halton at this time. The water ban was ini tially implemented to ensure an adequate supply in Halton's reservoirs for fire safety and essential house hold needs in the event of on-going power outages. As the provincial em ergency continues, the water ban is serving not only to maintain water reservoir levels, but is also an energy conservation measure. "O ur w ater plants use considerable energy to pump water through the sys tem, in fact they represent our highest consumption of energy at Halton. Therefore the less water our residents and businesses use, the less energy we require at our plants," said Pat Murphy, Halton's Commissioner of Planning and Public Works. "I want to thank Halton residents and businesses for their support and coopera tion during this challenging time," said Regional Chair Joyce Savoline. "Your con servation efforts are making a difference and collectively, we are contributing to the available energy supply in this province. I think that what we have learned from this is that there is now a new normal. Until we receive the green light from the province that all power stations are fully operational, we must continue with the measures we are taking."" In the m eantime, resi dents are asked to comply with the following restric tions: · Do not water your lawn (including in-ground sprin klers). The watering restric tions do not apply to flower and vegetable gardens, though gardens must be watered only with a watering can or a hose with a spray nozzle. Lawns that have been seeded or sodded in the past two months are exempt from the ban. · Do not wash your vehi cle · Do not wash your drive way or the sidewalk · Do not top up your pool · Do not fill fountains · Businesses must turn off autom ated lawn sprinkler systems. G olf courses, car washes and other businesses for which water use is critical to business operation are asked to restrict water use to a min imum. The ban applies to both residences and busi nesses in Halton. For more information or updates on the status of the ban please call Halton at 905-825-6000, Toll free: 1866-4HALTON (1-866-4425866) or visit Halton Region's Web site at www.region.halton.on.ca. The restrictions apply according to bylaw 93-89 across Halton Region, including the municipalities of Burlington, Halton Hills, Milton and Oakville. <1; Medic Alert Canadian children go back to school ... safely. New friends. New teachers. New adventures. Back-to-School means more independence for your children and more responsibility on your part to help them stay safe. On average, one child in every classroom in Canada has a medical condition or special need that should be managed in an emergency. Many of these children have allergies, asthm a or other medical conditions, and are too young to clearly explain the precautions needed to maintain their safety. Making sure teachers, school personnel and emergency responders can protect children at risk, is a critical part of MedicAlert services offered by the KidsProtect* program. With MedicAlert® m em bership, each child wears a bracelet or necklet custom-engraved with vital medical information - that is linked to the MedicAlert® 24-Hour Emergency Hotline. In an emergency, your child's detailed medical record is immediately available to health professionals to provide an invaluable head start in diagnosis and treatm ent.
